The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, in collaboration with ITS - Instructional services, has available to the School of Art and Art History, as well as to the whole University, two 3D Printers capable of making real world objects from 3D generated images and files. The Dimension SST 1200es creates plastic models which are very strong and durable and the Zcorp 650 Printer uses a plastic-based powder and colorable binder to create color models.
The 3D printers will be used for numerous projects throughout the University campus. Absolutely everybody associated with the University of Iowa has access to the printer, although in case of conflicts priority will go to the School of Art and Art History.
Both systems take STL files, but if you wish to have a color printing a VRML (.wrl) or 3DS (.3ds) file is needed.
