3D Printing

Description

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, in collaboration with ITS - Instructional services, has available to the School of Art and Art History, as well as to the whole University, two 3D Printers capable of making real world objects from 3D generated images and files.  The Dimension SST 1200es creates plastic models which are very strong and durable and the Zcorp 650 Printer uses a plastic-based powder and colorable binder to create color models.

The 3D printers will be used for numerous projects throughout the University campus. Absolutely everybody associated with the University of Iowa has access to the printer, although in case of conflicts priority will go to the School of Art and Art History.

Both systems take STL files, but if you wish to have a color printing a VRML (.wrl) or 3DS (.3ds) file is needed.

Getting training If you wish to learn how to use one or both printers, we do provide training.  However, due to the high cost of materials and the sensitivity of the equipment, we do require that anyone who wishes to physically use the printers be supervised by one of the 3D Printing staff.
Charges First printing is free for new users, but does not extend to a class where use of the printer is assigned as part of a project.

Cost for people withing the University:
  • Color printer parts straight out of the machine: $4.00/cu.in.
  • Color printer parts after post-processing binder is applied:  $7.00/cu.in.  Binder helps bring out the color in your parts and makes them much more strong and durable.
  • Dimension SST 1200es cost:  $5.00/cu.in.
Since the 3D Printers are primarily meant for student use, people within the University get a huge discount.  However, we are happy to provide this service to anyone outside the University for the following costs:
  • Color printer parts straight out of the machine:  $12/cu.in
  • Color printer parts after post-processing binder is applied:  $24.00/cu.in.
  • Dimension SST 1200es Printer:  $20/cu.in.
