Remote Access Dial Up Service - Retired 9/30/2009

› Remote Access Dial Up Service - Retired 9/30/2009

**UI Remote Access Service was Retired on September 30, 2009**

After careful consideration, ITS has decided that it is no longer economically feasible to offer the University of Iowa campus the ability to dial in to the campus network. The UI Remote Access (Dial-Up) service was retired as of September 30, 2009.

The costs of supporting the service continue to rise, despite the dramatic decline in the number of dialup users over the last several years. There has been an increasingly rapid drop-off since hitting its peak of 5900 UI Remote Access users in May 2003. In June 2009, there were only 279 users, which is a 95% drop in use.

We recognize, though, that for some of you dialup is the sole or most reasonable means of connecting to the UI campus network. In order to help you find a new Internet Service Provider (ISP), we have compiled a list of the alternatives available both in the Iowa City area and nationwide.

Both dialup and higher speed Internet connections are available from other service providers, with some dialup options costing $10/month or less.

If you have any questions, please contact the ITS Help Desk, its-helpdesk@uiowa.edu, 319-384-4357. The ITS Help Desk is fully prepared to answer your questions about this change. ITS is not in the position to make recommendations for specific service providers, but we will still be able to provide assistance based on general information about ISPs.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.
