The Initial Consultation

Shouldn't there be an easier way to do this?

It sounds interesting, but where could I go for help doing it?

How would this actually be useful for my students?

Maybe you've found yourself asking questions like these about technology and teaching. SITA can help.

The initial consultation, a meeting between you and SITA, is a place find answers. We will talk about your teaching and technology goals and identify ways to get them accomplished. Better still, we can make a plan to accomplish your goals with SITA support by your side from beginning to end. We have two guiding principles to keep in mind as we look for new projects:

  • We want you to be the owner of your project. As much as possible, we want to give you the training you need to be successful. We are committed to supporting you as develop your technology proficiency and independence.
  • Our projects support learning by University of Iowa students. We focus on supporting projects that provide direct instructional outcomes and enhance the student learning experience.

In the meeting, you will have a chance to articulate to SITA what you'd like to accomplish—don't worry if you're not clear on the specifics of how it would be done—that's what we're meeting to discuss!

Here are some of the issues we will cover during the initial consultation:

  • What is my overall teaching goal?
  • Will this project be tied to a specific class or will it be ongoing?
  • If the project is tied to a class, which one? How many students will be enrolled? What time constraints apply?
  • Do you have ideas about which technologies you would like to use? Have you used them before?
  • Have you found relevant examples of similar projects you could share?
  • Will you need help to perform production work on your project, or just provide training?
