Digital Media Consulting
We help enable faculty to work independently on integrating digital media (e.g., video, audio, podcasts, lecture capture, Flash) into instructional projects. We suggest pedagogically effective strategies, offer usage tips and techniques, and make hardware/software recommendations.
The use of digital media (audio and video) can greatly enhance presentations, course materials, or research projects. But while some uses might be easy - like editing a small movie to show in class - other projects can required a little more planning - like creating a searchable collection containing hundreds of videos. Either way, we can help you figure out what you'll need and how to use the technology to do it.
The key to success of any big digital media project is defining a good workflow. This means taking your concept and finding out the the most efficient way of making it work. As consultants to your digital media project, that's what we'll help you figure out. We do that by developing a "proof-of-concept" to see what it would take.
For example, we first learn your goals (such as building a large collection of web videos from several aging VHS tapes). We then learn what you (and your staff) will be using as well at what kind of audience will be viewing the finished product. Once we know your needs, we put our technology and staff to work in finding everything you'll need for the project - not just what hardware and software to use, but what you (or your staff) will have to learn to use it.
There are several resources around campus for doing digital media projects, and we act as a one-stop reference for figuring out what needs to be done and who you need to work with. For example, if you want to hire someone to film and edit a presentation - even though that's not something we do - we can put you in touch with groups who can do it. With one visit, we can get you all the information you need, without you having to call all around campus.
