Currently, we are able to integrate TurningPoint with ICON, both to produce participant lists for your courses and to import results into your grade books. What follows below are the instructions for exporting participant lists, exporting results out of TurningPoint, and importing those results into ICON. If you are looking for something specific, use the quick links above to jump to the corresponding section, otherwise feel free to start from the beginning and scroll down. Please note that the process requires a couple of work arounds. We are working to simplify the process, and with the release of the next version of TurningPoint, the process should get easier.

If you are having specific issues, use our Troubleshooting or Quick Guides sections to try to answer any questions. If you would like a printable PDF version of the instructions covering how to export your results out of TurningPoint for use in ICON, please click on the link above or click here. If you still have issues, please contact any of our listed contacts, which can be found here, or email our support at clicker-support@uiowa.edu.

How to export your Participant List out of ICON and import it into TurningPoint

On your ICON course instructor site, you will find the "Download clicker roster" link in your "Course tools" window (found on the right side of the window).

Clicking on this link will open a dialogue window where you can choose where to save the latest version of your course's participant list. You will need to save this file onto the computer in the classroom, so that you can import it into TurningPoint before you begin your presentation.

We recommend saving it to: My Documents\TurningPoint\Participants
Then this participant list will automatically appear in the pull down menu.

Otherwise, you will have to import your participant list. To do that, go to Participants > Import participant list. This will open a browser window. Find your list and import. It will then appear in the participant list pull down menu. import list

You will be able to download the necessary file from our website at: http://its.uiowa.edu/support/srs/downloads.shtm. Please note that the file you download is a zipped folder. You will need to extract the file and save the "D2L Iowa.tpx" file into the Export Schemes folder on your computer.

If you are having issues, here is something to double check:

If you are having issues importing your file into ICON, check and make sure the text file you are exporting from TurningPoint is in the proper format. Two common error messages you might receive when importing your grades into ICON are: "File not readable" and perhaps "Imported file has too many comma-delimited columns." If you get these or similar messages, chances are that some element in your exported text file is missing. Even an accidentally delete comma will cause issues.

The text file should resemble the image on the right. It should list each students Hawk ID, last name, first name, the points they received, and then end with #. Each of these elements should be separated by a comma.

verification
The first line should be as shown, except that you can exchange the "TP" for what you would like the name of your grade item to be. Be sure not to delete any of the commas separating the pieces of information. Also make sure to get rid of the extra ,0,# after the word "Indicator."

Note: You will need to be careful with is the naming of the imported results. Each time you import your results from TurningPoint, the results are labeled "tp". We recommend you change the "tp" to your desired grading column name when you export your results out of TurningPoint (step 6 in the export instructions above). Otherwise, you will need to rename your grade book in ICON. If you don't create a new grading item each time, the previous results will be overwritten when you import the new results, unless you have renamed the previous results.
