Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is plagiarism? (and other research resources from Turnitin.com)
  • What file formats will Turnitin accept?

Turnitin.com allows you to upload the following formats:

    • Microsoft Word (.doc)
    • Plain text (.txt)
    • Adobe Acrobat PDF (.pdf)
    • Rich Text Format (.rtf)
    • PostScript (.ps)
    • WordPerfect (.wpd)
    • HTML (.html, htm)

If you use a different word processor (e.g. StarWriter, LaTeX, etc.) you should be able to save your paper in one of these formats and then submit it to Turnitin.com. Alternatively, you can cut and paste the contents of your paper into an online form when submitting.

  • Will I get a report telling me whether my paper was plagiarized?

Maybe, this is up to your instructor. Talk to your instructor about this if you have any questions.

If you do receive a report...
Technically, you will not receive a report that says "Yes, this paper was definitely plagiarized!". You and your instructor will both have an active web link in your Turnitin accounts to an "originality report". This report notes any similarities between your paper and papers in an immense and growing database hosted by Turnitin.com. This "originality report" merely aids the instructor when she or he senses that the originality of a paper is questionable.
