Skype for Business (Lync) will replicate the picture that you have chosen to represent your Office 365 email profile picture. If you'd like a different picture or you would like a picture in Skype for Business but not on your email account, follow the steps below.

In Skype for Business you can connect to a picture hosted on a public website (examples: Facebook profile pics, Public folder of Microsoft OneDrive for Business).

If the picture is larger than 30 KB, you will need to use the snipping tool to select smaller portion of the picture to reduce it to a smaller size or use another photo edit application to resize the picture. If you have to change the size of the picture, make sure to upload the new, smaller picture to your choice of public picture site (Flickr, Facebook, etc).  Once your picture is the right size, you can add it to Skype for Business using the following steps:

  1. Navigate to your public picture site and select the photo album that contains the picture you are choosing. Make sure this album is Public.
  2. Copy the Address URL for the picture you have publicly posted.  Steps to do this will vary depending on browser and public picture website used.  Some examples are included at the end of this article.
  3. Open Microsoft Skype for Business 2013 and click on the Options icon (cog wheel) on the right hand side
  4. Go to Tools | Options
  5. Select My Picture
  6. Choose ‘Show a picture from a website’
  7. Paste in the link for your picture and click ‘Connect to Picture’
  8. Click OK
  9. Please note that in the client the picture needs to be 30 KB or smaller and on a website that doesn't require a password.
  1. Right Click on the picture you wish to use
  2. Select "Copy Image URL" from the drop down menu
  3. Open up Skype for Business
  4. Click on the Options icon
  5. Go to Tools | Options, Select My Picture, Choose ‘Show a picture from a website’
  6. Paste in the link and click "Connect to Picture"
  7. Click OK

Please Note:

1. If you change your profile picture on OneDrive for Business or Facebook, it will NOT automatically change in Skype for Business (because you are linking directly to the selected picture.) You will have to go back and select the new profile picture if you want it to show up for Skype for Business.

2. If you delete the profile picture on OneDrive for Business or Facebook it will no longer show up on Skype for Business.

3. Depending where your picture is hosted, it may or may not display for Mac Skype for Business users.

  1. Go to office365.uiowa.edu
  2. Log in with hawkid@uiowa.edu and your hawkid password
  3. Select OneDrive tile or menu
