Gradebook: Treating ungraded items as zero

Checking the Gradebook setting "Treat Ungraded as 0," does not work as one would think. Unfortunetly, this setting only changes the grades for the instructor, not the student. This leads to some confusion between instructors and students seeing different grade totals.

Solution

In order to fix this, we are going to use set default grades for each assignment instead of "Treat Ungraded as 0."

  1. Log into icon.uiowa.edu and open up your course.
  2. Click on Grades.

  1. Hover over the assignment title and click the drop-down menu, then click Set Default Grade.

  1. Type 0 in the box for scores, as we want our assignment to default to this value if another grade has not been inputted. Do not check "Overwrite already entered grades," as this will eliminate any previous grading that you have done for this assignment.

  1. A pop up should appear saying " # Student Scores Updated" click Ok and view the new default grades.

If this does not work, or you click a setting you didn't mean to, you can use Grading History to resolve any issues. https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-9947-415295585
