Student FAQ: Logging into ICON

  1. Open your browser and go to https://icon.uiowa.edu. Be sure not to include a www in your web address.
  2. If you have a HawkID: Click the “HawkID Login” option. Log in to ICON by entering your HawkID and password.
  3. You will see your ICON Dashboard with all your course listings for the current semester. You can change your view to another semester by selecting from the dropdown menu on the upper right.
  4. View all courses together by clicking on “Canvas Home”.
  5. Click your course title. You will be taken to the course homepage.

Common reasons:

  • You forgot your Hawk ID password. Can you log into other HawkID services? If not, call the ITS Help Desk at 319-384-4357 and request to have your password reset. Note: If you have already set up “password hints” (security questions that only you can answer), you can reset a forgotten password yourself at the HawkID Tools website (http://hawkid.uiowa.edu/).

  • Your HawkID is locked. This occurs if an incorrect HawkID password has been entered too many times in a row. Your HawkID will automatically unlock after 15 minutes of no bad password attempts. You can also contact the ITS Help Desk (http://its.uiowa.edu/contact) to have it manually unlocked. If you have previously set up “password hints” at http://hawkid.uiowa.edu, you can unlock yourself on that website.

  • Your Hawk ID password has expired. Passwords must be changed every 365 days or they will expire. If you suspect your password has expired, and/or you cannot log into other HawkID services, call the ITS Help Desk at 319-384-4357 and request to have it reset. Note: If you have already set up “password hints” (security questions that only you can answer), you can reset an expired yourself at the HawkID Tools website (http://hawkid.uiowa.edu/).

  • You are not eligible for ICON. If you have registered for classes within the last two days, it takes 24-48 hours for you to be able to log into ICON. If your affiliation with the University has ended, you will not be able to log into ICON. If you do need to access ICON to finish a course, contact the ITS Help Desk at 319-384-4357 or http://its.uiowa.edu/contact.

  • You changed your Hawk ID (e.g., after marriage) If you change your Hawk ID (e.g., to a married name, etc.), it takes 24-48 hours for ICON to update and recognize your new HawkID, even though other University HawkID-based services like email and MyUI may allow access sooner.

  • Your new (Dell, Toshiba, Gateway) computer came with a trial version of the McAfee Internet Security Suite. This software may prevent users from accessing ICON. Uninstall it and learn about recommend free anti-virus software at http://its.uiowa.edu/support/article/100582.
