Anti-virus protection for home use - Article 100582

All computers (Mac, PC, and Linux) are susceptible to viruses, spyware, and malware. That is why it is important to protect your computer from potential viruses by having an antivirus program installed on your computer. 

The University of Iowa's site license for Symantec Endpoint Protection expires on June 30, 2013. Therefore ITS no longer provides antivirus (Symantec Endpoint Protection) to students, faculty and staff for home use. Contact your departmental IT staff if you need to have antivirus installed on a university-owned/departmental computer. 

There are a wide range of free and paid antivirus products available. It is important to note that paid antiviruses often have annual renewal fees. Here are a few examples of free antivirus programs:

Note: Some users have reported issues with Avast! antivirus blocking Java for Blackboard Collaborate web conferencing.  If you use Blackboard Collaborate, ITS recommends using one of the free options below to avoid conflicts.
