Using Chrome Extensions to Update a Legacy Application

Old applications never die. This presentation will assume that you have been tasked with updating a web application that hasn’t been touched for 10 years and the creators are no longer around. It requires a HawkID for access, so can’t be automatically scanned for accessibility issues. We’ll walk through 6 different Chrome extensions that you can use in the browser and talk about some of their strengths. Once we’re ready to make changes to the code, we’ll look at ways to integrate automatic accessibility scans into code testing with the Axe tools into Playwright.

Bob Ramsey is a veteran application developer, problem solver, and dinosaur aficionado.

Tools covered include:

Chrome Extensions:

  • Axe Dev tools from Deque – Chrome and Firefox extensions
  • Accessibility Insights for Web from Accessibility Insights – Chrome only

Axe and Insights are both based on the axe toolkit from Deque so give very similar reports.

  • WAVE from WebAIM – Chrome and Firefox extensions
  • ARC Toolkit from TPGi – Chrome and Firefox extensions
  • ARIA DevTools from Ziolko on Github – Chrome and Firefox extensions
  • Silktide from Silktide – Chrome only
