Home networks and personal devices are prime targets for cybercriminals. They know that wi-fi networks, smartphones, laptops, and other tools you manage on your own can be vulnerable.

Fortunately, you don’t have to be a cybersecurity pro to strengthen security for your network and devices. Take a few crucial steps to protect yourself and others.

Set up and use secure networks

First, make sure your home Wi-Fi network is secure. Use a robust and unique password for your wireless router and enable WPA3 encryption to keep authorized users out. You can find security and encryption settings in the software you use to manage your router.

Keep your router (and all your other devices) secure by regularly checking for and installing software updates. Device manufacturers regularly release firmware patches that fix security gaps. It’s essential to make sure you’re using the newest software.

When you’re away from home, consider using a virtual private network (VPN) to access the internet. VPNs add an extra layer of encryption that’s especially important when you’re connected to public Wi-Fi, protecting your data from being intercepted.

The University of Iowa offers VPNs that can enhance your security and provide remote access to campus resources. Learn more about VPNs available to students, staff, and faculty.

Manage permissions for mobile apps and devices

It’s also important to manage the permissions you grant for mobile apps and devices, and to regularly uninstall any apps you no longer use.

Only grant apps permission to access the features (for example, your phone’s camera or location services) they need to function. You can review and change app permissions from your device’s settings.

Avoid downloading apps from unfamiliar sources (i.e., any source other than your device’s official store). Periodically review the apps on your device and remove any you no longer use. Learn more about mobile security and data management.

Implement these steps right now

If you haven’t already secured your home network and personal devices, take these steps today:

  1. Set a strong password on your Wi-Fi router and enable WPA3 encryption.
  2. Check for software updates and install new device firmware if it’s available.
  3. Learn how to access a VPN when on public or unsecured networks.
  4. Review and update your mobile app permissions.
  5. Uninstall any mobile apps you don’t use.
  6. Avoid apps or software from unfamiliar sources.

Implementing these security practices can help you keep cybercriminals at bay. See additional security tips for creating strong passwords and identifying phishing scams.
