The Iowa Initiative for Artificial Intelligence (IIAI), in collaboration with Information Technology Services, is once again offering introductory short courses in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML) this fall. These courses are open to all University of Iowa faculty, staff, and students, who may take individual courses or complete a sequence to earn the HawkAI Certificate of Proficiency in AI/ML. Courses will be offered on Tuesdays at 5 p.m. starting Oct. 7, 2025.
The Level 1 HawkAI Certificate provides foundational knowledge to help participants understand the evolving AI landscape, stay current with rapid technological advancements, and use powerful tools like Copilot and ChatGPT more effectively. The curriculum offers a well-rounded introduction to both generative and analytical AI, while emphasizing ethical considerations and the importance of trustworthy AI practices across disciplines.
No prior experience in AI or computing is required. All Level 1 courses are free of charge, fully virtual, and taught by University of Iowa faculty and staff. The program includes seven courses, each ranging from one to three hours. To earn the certificate, participants must complete four courses, attend all sessions, and pass a brief quiz.

The HawkAI series of courses is made possible through funding support from the P3 Program, and campus-wide collaboration and support from the College of Engineering, and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
