Below are frequently asked questions about our anti-spam and phishing efforts.
What is used to determine what is or is not spam?
ITS uses Exchange Online Protection (EOP) to filter and mark the "spam" messages as junk.
- Any message that has a SCL (Spam Confidence Level) of 7 or higher is rejected.
- Any message that has a SCL of 5-6 is moved to your Junk Email folder.
- Any message that has a SCL of 4 or lower is delivered to your Inbox.
Occasionally, a spam message will slip through without being flagged, because spammers are constantly coming up with new ways to "beat the system." The reverse is also true. Once in a while, a legitimate message might be flagged as spam when it is not. If you receive a message that you think should have been moved to Junk Email folder, see How to Report a Phishing Scam or Spam Email for instructions. If you receive a message that shouldn't be marked as spam, see How Do I Manage Junk Email and Spam
Does Iowa have an anti-spam law?
Yes, Iowa does have an anti-spam law. See Iowa Code Chapter 716A.2 for details.
Defending our Campus
