RemoteBI is a Remote Desktop Services (RDS) service that provides members of the university community a central location to access Business Intelligence (BI) development tools and resources.  Additionally, it acts as a bridge to restricted data sources (i.e. data in the high security firewall context) that may not be directly accessible from a local workstation.

Servers: RemoteBITest2019.uiowa.edu and RemoteBI2019.uiowa.edu         (NOTE: DUO authentication with your admin id is mandatory to access the servers.)

Tools installed on Remote BI include:

  • Visual Studio Professional Edition
  • SQL Server Data Tools
  • Pragmatic Works Task Factory
  • SQL Server Management Studio
  • DBVisualizer
  • Attunity Oracle Drivers
  • Amazon Redshift ODBC drivers

These tools are kept in parity with IDDM’s hosted Microsoft Data Platform infrastructure (shared services for SQL Server databases, SQL Server data marts, SQL Server Integration Services, SQL Server Reporting Services, and SQL Server Analysis Services).

A current Visual Studio or MSDN license is required for access to RemoteBI and may be purchased at a reduced price through the Microsoft Select Program for the University of Iowa. We recommend that you purchase Visual Studio Pro unless the user needs access to the Microsoft Developer Network, then the recommendation would be Visual Studio with MSDN.

To request access to the RemoteBI servers, complete the RemoteBI Server Access Request form and attach proof of a Visual Studio or MSDN license.  Examples of proof include: purchase invoice and/or an email confirmation of license (PDF or Word document) from the Campus Software Licensing and Acquisition group.

DUO Authentication

To ensure that your admin account (which you use to access the jump box) is linked to the same DUO authentication methods as your primary account, use the tools located at https://iam.uiowa.edu/accounts/twostep

  • Log into the Duo Configuration page with your HawkID
  • Enable Duo for your Admin ID

Contact the ITS Help Desk if you have difficulty completing this step.

Additional questions about the RemoteBI server can be directed to the Data, Analytics and Insights Team at:  ITS-DAISupport@uiowa.edu
