Please read this information carefully as the sign in process for Skype for Business has changed and may vary depending on the user account.
Your SIP address is now required to sign in to Skype for Business. SIP addresses can look very similar to email addresses, but may be different depending on the situations outlined below:
- Users added to Skype for Business prior to July 23, 2020 have a SIP address that is the same as their email address.
- Users added to Skype for Business after July23, 2020 , or users that change their name, will have a SIP address in the format of: HawkID@uiowa.edu.

Signing in to Skype for Business
- Signing into your Skype for Business software client requires several pieces of information:
- Your SIP address
- Your HawkID
- Your HawkID password.
What is a SIP address?
- SIP, or Session Initiated Protocol, is an Internet protocol that allows you to participate in live communication sessions over the Internet.
- Skype for Business uses SIP for all voice over IP (VoIP) communication.
How do I get a SIP address?
- A SIP address is automatically assigned to you when you are licensed for Skype for Business.
Are my SIP address and email address the same?
- SIP addresses can look very similar to email addresses, but may look different depending on the situations outlined below:
- Users added to Skype for Business prior to July 23, 2020 have a SIP address that is the same as their email address.
- Users added to Skype for Business after July23, 2020 , or users that change their name, will have a SIP address in the format of: HawkID@uiowa.edu.
How does this impact signing into Skype for Business?
- Users added to Skype for Business after July 23, 2020 will use the following credentials:
- SIP Address: HawkID@uiowa.edu
- Username: HawkID@uiowa.edu
- Password: Password assigned to user account above
- Users added before July 23, 2020 will use the following credentials:
- SIP Address: first-last@uiowa.edu (same as your email address)
- Username: HawkID@uiowa.edu
- Password: Password assigned to user account above
How do I determine my SIP address and or get help signing in to Skype for Business?
- From within Outlook, select “Address Book” from the toolbar. Search for your name and double click to open the detailed contact card. Select E-mail Addresses tab. Your SIP address will be listed.
- For additional help determining your SIP address:

- Contact your assigned IT support staff
Signing in to Skype for Business on Windows
Enter your SIP Address in the sign-in address field and then click on the Sign-In button.
Enter your SIP address again in the User Name field, enter your password, select "Save my password" and then click on the Sign-in button to complete the sign in process.
When presented with the Office 365 login dialog window, enter your HawkID and Password in the areas provided and then click on the blue Log In button. The HawkID field may pre-populate with your email address; if this occurs replace it with your HawkID@uiowa.edu as in the example below.
When the Duo Two-Factor Authentication windows appears, follow the Duo instructions for secure authentication.
Signing in to Skype for Business on the Mac
Enter your SIP address in the sign-in address field and then click on the Continue button.
When presented with the Office 365 login dialog window, enter your HawkID and Password in the areas provided and then click on the blue Log In button. The HawkID field may pre-populate with your email address; if this occurs replace it with your HawkID@uiowa.edu as in the example below.
When the Duo Two-Factor Authentication windows appears, follow the Duo instructions for secure authentication.
