Information Technology Services has enabled room-level Skype for Business Location Information, to ensure compliance with the RAY BAUM’S Act. This act requires that information such as street address, building number, floor number and suite be included in the dispatchable location information provided to public safety at the time of a 911 call.

Currently, when a 911 call is placed, only the caller’s current building is transmitted to the public-safety answering point (PSAP) when using Skype for Business client (Windows / macOS) or VoIP phone. After room-level Location Information is enabled, the end user’s current building, floor, and room will be transmitted to the PSAP.

Wired

No action is required; the end user’s current location information will be automatically added based on the Ethernet port that your device is connected to.

Off-Campus

Windows and macOS users will be prompted to add your current location information in their Skype for Business client. Skype for Business will store this location information and automatically update the next time the end user is at this location.

As part of implementing room-level Skype for Business Location Information, ITS will be disabling Location Information Sharing within Skype for Business client. After the location policy is applied, users will no longer be able to view the on-campus location of other Skype for Business users; however, end users will be able to verify their location is correct as their current location will be visible within the Skype for Business client.

If a location is set by the end user when working off-campus in the Skype for Business client, the Location Name (Home, Working Remotely, etc.) will continue to be visible to other Skype for Business users.

While the on-campus Location Information for Skype for Business users will not be visible to other Skype for Business, the current location will be provided to the public-safety answering point when dialing 911.

You will be prompted to enter your location in Skype for Business if you are located off-campus. When you are on campus and if you move to other buildings, your location data will be updated and displayed under your name automatically.
