Overview

When you use our Campus-to-Cloud Connectivity offering in your VPC, DNS will work slightly differently. We leverage an AWS service called Route 53 Resolver.

Behavior

DNS lookups for any hostname that reside in the uiowa.edu namespace (including subdomains like iowa.uiowa.edu) will traverse the site-to-site VPN connection and will be resolved by campus DNS resolvers. The IP ranges we use in VPCs are configured to retrieve the internal view in DNS as well, so any records you resolve from on-campus will resolve the same way. DNS lookups for non-uiowa.edu hostnames will use Amazon-provided DNS resolvers, allowing AWS services that rely on internal DNS naming to continue to function as intended.

Reverse lookups for campus IPs will also work for the following ranges:

  • 128.255.0.0/16
  • 129.255.0.0/16
  • 172.30.0.0/16

Limitations

At this time, DNS lookups for private DNS zones in AWS will not resolve from campus. If you have a specific need, please talk to the Cloud Team.
