There is no charge for use of this service.

Plagiarism Detection is the process of checking papers against external sources and identifying sections of papers that may have been plagiarized.

The University of Iowa has licensed Turnitin (http://turnitin.com), an online, automatic plagiarism detection service for campus-wide use, and we encourage all instructors to utilize this tool.

Students submit their papers via ICON (Canvas) and the instructor receives an originality report showing possible matches between the submitted paper and Turnitin's database and internet resources. It is important to note that the final decision about the presence of a plagiarism lies with the instructor.

There are two ways instructors can use Turnitin's Plagiarism Detection service.

1. ICON (Canvas). This option is highly recommended.

2. Turnitin website. This option is not recommended. If instructors wish to use the web interface, they can contact the HelpDesk for details.

Turnitin offers the Feedback Studio, a comprehensive grading and writing tool, which features QuickMarks, and a peer review tool, PeerMark.

 

News and Information:

On January 16, 2018, Feedback Studio offers faster formative Similarity Reports, which gives students more support to master paraphrasing and citation conventions. For instructors who allow resubmissions within their assignment settings, students are able to view their Similarity Report, then revise and resubmit their work up to three times, without waiting 24 hours. Update: Canvas has fixed the underlying issue that caused submissions made via Turnitin LTI to return a file name of "default_filename.txt". Canvas has also run an automated script that should repair the majority of papers affected by the issue.

 

Original Alert: Some student submissions for Turnitin assignments are not displaying in Speedgrader in ICON, instead they are displayed as “default_filename.txt.”  ITS staff are working with the vendor to resolve this issue.

In the meantime, the workaround is to use Turnitin’s Feedback Studio by going to the Grades or Assignments page and clicking on the color-coded percentage speech bubble to access and grade papers.

The plagiarism detection service, Turnitin, will be down for maintenance to enable the new feature Turnitin Feedback Studio.

If an assignment was created using the “Enable Turnitin Submissions” check box, the legacy submissions will no longer be available in Turnitin in ICON. However, student submissions will still be available in SpeedGrader in ICON.
