This project aims to upgrade university-owned Windows 10 devices to Windows 11, Microsoft’s newest release of the Windows operating system.

What is Windows 11?

Windows 11 is an updated operating system that allows you to use the same familiar tools and processes, with updates to enhance productivity. It includes improved security features and a modern user interface.

Why are we moving to Windows 11?

Starting October 14. 2025, Microsoft will no longer support or provide free software updates for Windows 10. Due to this change, it is necessary to upgrade to Windows 11.

What’s new?

Windows 11 features a simplified user interface. The Start menu, now centered on the taskbar, combines pinned apps, recent documents, and a powerful search function. File Explorer organizes all files and folders in one place, highlighting recommended, favorite, and recent items. An autocomplete feature predicts actions to speed up tasks.

When will we transition to Windows 11?

As part of our Microsoft campus agreement, ITS Extended Technical Support staff has been upgrading systems across campus since 2022. If you have not been contacted to schedule the upgrade, reach out to your local ETS support staff for a consultation. ETS staff can determine if your device is capable of upgrading.

Why can’t my device upgrade to Windows 11?

Older hardware may need to be replaced due to hardware incompatibility. Windows 11 requires devices to meet the minimum specs, including TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot.

What can I do to prepare for the upgrade?

While your files and applications will remain on your computer during the Windows 11 upgrade, please ensure OneDrive is syncing properly to verify that you have a current backup of your work. The upgrade can take approximately 30 minutes or more, depending on the age of the machine. Your device should be plugged into power, and you should schedule the upgrade when you do not need your computer.
