There are several ways to access your Microsoft 365 email from off-campus, review the following guides to learn more and choose a method that works best for you.

Note: To log in to your university Microsoft 365 account using any of the below methods, your account sign-in should be in the format of HawkID@uiowa.edu and then your standard HawkID password.

Outlook on the web is a web-based email for Microsoft 365 that can be accessed in any web browser, such as Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, or Microsoft Edge. Outlook on the web can be used from any computer with an Internet connection and a web browser. Learn more about accessing your email on the web on the ITS support site, or log in to the University of Iowa Office 365 portal.

Mobile devices: You can use a mobile app to check your Office 365 account on your tablet or smartphone. Learn more about the options available and how to configure your mobile device for Microsoft 365 using our support guides.

Windows or Mac computers: We recommend using the Outlook desktop application to access your email from a Windows or Mac computer, but if you prefer you can also add it to the default mail apps that come with Windows or Mac operating systems. Visit our guides for step-by-step instructions on setting up your university email on your Windows or Mac computer. If you have trouble connecting, you may need to connect to the VPN the first time you configure your client from off-campus.

Remote Desktop allows you to access your on-campus computer as if you were sitting in front of it. Follow our step-by-step guides on connecting to your on-campus computer using Remote Desktop, and once connected you can then launch Outlook on your remote computer to access your Microsoft 365 account.

A variety of applications are available through the university Virtual Desktop service, and if the previous options for accessing your Microsoft 365 email are unavailable to you, you can access your Microsoft 365 account from off-campus by using Virtual Desktop and opening the Outlook 2019 application.

Connecting to the VPN with Cisco AnyConnect is required to use the Virtual Desktop service from off-campus.
