Linux is an operating system created by Linus Torvalds with the goal of creating a clone of UNIX that could run on normal PC hardware. It is maintained as "open source" software. The source code is freely available to anyone, and can be modified by anyone so long as they comply with the relevant licensing provisions.

Currently, the ITS Help Desk provides limited support for the Linux operating system. This page is meant as a portal to other sites that can provide community support, how-tos, and other instruction guides for Linux users.

The College of Liberal Arts & Sciences has a robust Linux desktop offering.   CLAS offers this desktop environment primarily for CLAS faculty, staff, and students but does not restrict who can obtain an account or use the service.  See CLAS Linux for details about how to create an account, access your account via FastX or SSH, terms and conditions, and other Linux help topics.

ITS Research Services offers Linux based High Performance Computing services that include a remote desktop environment and access to thousands of processor cores and large amounts of memory for large scale simulation and data analysis. Please see the HPC website for more details.
