For other email clients: Here are instructions for showing headers for various email clients. You will need to copy and paste the headers into the forwarded message.

Sometimes to troubleshoot a problem you are having ITS needs to see the complete message that you received including the header information.  We usually prefer this to be sent as an attached item where possible.

iPad, iPhone and Android and other mobile device users should log into Outlook on the web (https://office365.uiowa.edu) to forward an email with full headers.

You have several options for forwarding the message as an attachment depending on your version of Outlook.

  1. Select the message in your navigation panel.
  2. Press Ctrl + Alt + F
  3. This will open a new message with the selected message included as an attachment.

OR

  1. Open the message you wish to forward
  2. Click the ... icon and select Forward as Attachment.  The message is then attached.  Type any needed information in the body of the message and click Send.

OR

  1. Start a new message.
  2. Move and resize the new message window and Inbox windows so you can see both windows at once.
  3. Select the email that you want to forward.
  4. Drag it and drop it into the body of your new message.

OR

  1. Start a new message.
  2. Right click on the message to forward and choose Copy.
  3. Right click in the body of the new message and choose Paste.

OR

  1. Start a new message.
  2. Select Attach Item from the toolbar.
  3. Select Outlook Item.
  4. Browse to the message you are inquiring about, and select it to attach it.

​To view the full headers of message

  1. Open the message.
  2. Select File | Info | Properties.
  3. The headers will be in the section marked Internet Headers.
  4. Click in the Internet Headers section then press Ctrl+A to select all
  5. This can be Copied (Ctrl+C) and pasted (Ctrl+P) into a forwarded copy of the message.

  1. Start a new message.
  2. Move and resize the new message window and Inbox windows so you can see both windows at once.
  3. Select the email that you want to forward.
  4. Drag it and drop it into the body of your new message.

  1. CTRL + Click on the message to forward.
  2. Choose Forward as an Attachment

 

  1. Login to Outlook on the web.
  2. Click the Outlook icon
  3. Click the Mail icon
  4. Open the message to forward
  5. Click the down arrow next to the forward icon and select Forward as attachment

  1. Login to Outlook on the web
  2. Click the Outlook icon.
  3. Click the Mail icon
  4. Start a new message.
  5. (if needed) Move and resize the window so you can see your messages list.
  6. Select the email that you want to forward.
  7. Drag it and drop it into the body of your new message.

OR

  1. Login to Outlook on the web
  2. Click the Outlook icon.
  3. Click the Mail icon
  4. Open the email message by double clicking it.
  5. Click on the ellipsis (the 3 dots) to the right of "Forward" to open a drop-down menu
  6. Click "View Message Details"
  7. Select all the text and copy it. 
  8. Close the header information window
  9. Click on the forward icon of your message. 
  10. Paste the copied text at the beginning of the message. 
  11. Send the message.
