This FAQ page will address common questions pertaining to Qualtrics usage, including supported browsers, IRB approved surveys, creating surveys, sharing surveys, and much more.

Qualtrics’ web-based survey interface has been tested on a number of web browsers, and is compatible with IE 7+, Safari 4+, Firefox 3+, and Chrome.  Additional information about supported browsers can be found here
IMPORTANT: It is recommended that account holders test their survey functionality in all browsers prior to inviting survey respondents.  When a survey is Activated, it is may too late to resolve most issues.

Qualtrics allows you to import survey questions as .txt files.  In order to import your WebSurveyor surveys in Qualtrics, you will need to follow the steps below.

Please note:  All of the following instructions assume you are viewing your survey, and that the survey has no page breaks or conditional logic.  If you have either of these, you may wish to make a copy of your survey, then remove the page breaks and/or logic within the copied survey (in order to view and save your entire survey from one screen).

FOR WINDOWS BROWSERS
(Includes Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox & Google Chrome)

  1. Open live survey in browser (not the "Preview" version)
  2. Within the browser window (the survey itself), press Ctrl + A to select all of the contents in the window (or  Right-Click within the window, and select "Select All" from the resulting menu)
  3. Within the browser window (the survey itself), press Ctrl + C to copy the contents of the browser (or Right-Click within the window, and select "Select All")
  4. Open the Notepad application (Start --> All Programs --> Accessories --> Notepad)
  5. Paste the contents from the browser window into Notepad (Ctrl + V, or Edit --> Paste)
  6. Select File --> Save As, and save the file to your computer
  7. Follow the PREPARE A .TXT IN SIMPLE FORMAT FOR IMPORTING steps on the this Qualtrics page
  8. Follow the IMPORT SURVEY steps on the same page to import your survey in Qualtrics

FOR MAC BROWSERS
(Follow the appropriate set of instructions below, based on your browser)

Mozilla Firefox (Mac):

  1. Open survey in browser
  2. Select File --> Save Page As
  3. From the resulting Save As window, do the following:
  4. - Navigate to the location you wish to save,
  5. - Select Web Page, Complete (from the Save As: drop-down menu), and
  6. - Click Save to save the file
  7. Open TextEdit
  8. From TextEdit, select File --> Open, and select the survey you saved in step 3 above
  9. Select Format --> Make Plain Text.  When prompted with a message to "Convert this document to plain text?", click OK
  10. Save the file as a Plain Text file
  11. Follow the PREPARE A .TXT IN SIMPLE FORMAT FOR IMPORTING steps on the this Qualtrics page
  12. Follow the IMPORT SURVEY steps on the same page to import your survey in Qualtrics

Safari (Mac):

  1. Open survey in browser
  2. Select File --> Save As
  3. From the resulting window, do the following:
  4. - Navigate to the location you wish to save,
  5. - Select Web Archive (from the Save As: drop-down menu), and
  6. - Click Save to save the file
  7. Open TextEdit
  8. From TextEdit, select File --> Open, and select the survey you saved in step 3 above
  9. Select Format --> Make Plain Text.  When prompted with a message to "Convert this document to plain text?", click OK
  10. Save the file as a Plain Text file
  11. Follow the PREPARE A .TXT IN SIMPLE FORMAT FOR IMPORTING steps on the this Qualtrics page
  12. Follow the IMPORT SURVEY steps on the same page to import your survey in Qualtrics

Google Chrome (Mac):

  1. Open survey in browser
  2. Select File --> Save Page As
  3. From the resulting window, do the following:
  4. - Navigate to the location you wish to save,

  6. - Click Save to save the file
  7. Open TextEdit
  8. From TextEdit, select File --> Open, and select the survey you saved in step 3 above

Surveys are saved by default even if they have not been "Activated".  The survey will appear in the list of surveys found on the My Surveys tab. 

Yes, you may use Qualtrics for your surveys requiring IRB approval.  Please note that the use of Qualtrics for any survey requiring IRB approval must be approved, and informating regarding its use must be included in the HawkIRB research application (as with any data collection instrument).  Please contact the IRB for additional information regarding the HawkIRB research application.

No, Qualtrics surveys can have only one account holder.  A survey owner may share their survey(s) with others to collaborate on a project by using the Share Project feature.  For further information regarding this feature, please see the Sharing a Project support article on the Qualtrics support site.

Because Qualtrics uses single sign-on authentication (Shibboleth) at the University of Iowa, you will need to close all instances of your browser in order to completely "log out" of the software.
