If I want Microsoft SQL Server access, why is ITS charging me for this?
This is for applications that require dedicated resources for SQL Server. The charge is to cover SQL Server licensing and hosting. Many solutions are eligible to use shared database hosting services offered at no cost. Contact the ITS SQL Server DBA team at ITS-SQL-Help@uiowa.edu for more information.
Does ITS provide a cheaper way to access Microsoft SQL Server?
ITS has a free Microsoft SQL hosted server and Oracle hosted server. These work for applications that don’t need highly specialized access or configurations that don't require “Systems Administrator” (SA) access. The additional-cost SQL Server offering is targeted for applications that need to have a dedicated system.
On a Managed server, can I get system administrator support?
Managed servers include 1 hour per month of base OS support. System administrator support beyond that is available at an additional charge.
I want to manage a server myself. Can I get that option?
Customer-Managed (also known as "co-lo") servers are available. For more information, see
The Customer-Managed service level does not include any management services from ITS.
I have a Managed server and want to recover from a backup. How do I do that?
Submit a restore request via the ITS Help Desk and ITS will do the restore.
I have a Customer-Managed server and want to recover from a backup. How do I do that?
Backups and restores for Customer-Managed (co-lo) servers are the customer's responsibility.
Who do I contact to purchase a virtual server?
Review Managed Application and Platform Level Services to choose the service level that's right for your needs, or for contact information for a consultation. A virtual server can be requested through a Workflow form.
