How to use pronouns in Zoom Meetings/Webinars

Zoom pronouns will be determined by the pronouns selected in MyUI or Employee Self-Service.
This data may take up to 24 hours to fully sync with Zoom.

You will need to update your Zoom client to a minimum version of 5.7.0 to see pronouns in a Zoom meeting or webinar. To find out how to update, please visit: How to Update the Zoom Client

Please note: By default, once you have followed the steps below to setup your pronouns, Zoom will ask you each time you enter a meeting or webinar to confirm if you'd like to use your public pronouns. If you would like to change the default behavior, please follow the steps under How to use your pronouns in Zoom.

Please note: Pronouns are currently always visible to your Zoom contacts as part of your Zoom profile card, which you can view in your Contacts tab or by hovering over a person’s avatar in Zoom Chat.


How to setup your campus pronouns before they are available in Zoom

To use this feature, please first follow the instructions below to enable your pronouns for use with University of Iowa services:

  • If you are a UI student: 
    1. Go to MyUI
    2. Click the button HawkID Login 
    3. Log in using your HawkID and password
    4. Click on Name/Pronouns
    5. Make any updates to your pronouns using the drop down menu under My pronouns are:
    6. Click Save my name and pronouns
    7. In the How should we address you in public section, look under In public:, select You may use my pronouns
    8. Click Update my public name and pronoun choices
  • If you are a UI employee:
    1. Go to Employee Self-Service
    2. Click My Self Service
    3. Click Personal Information
    4. Click Names and Pronouns
    5. Make any updates to your pronouns using the drop down menu under My pronouns are:
    6. Click Save my name and pronouns
    7. In the How should we address you in public section, look under In public:, select You may use my pronouns
    8. Click Update my public name and pronoun choices

Changes may take a few hours to be available in Zoom. More detailed information about updating pronouns is available at Update my name and pronouns in UI Systems.


How to use your pronouns in Zoom

  1. Sign into Zoom by going to https://uiowa.zoom.us
  2. In the navigation panel, click Profile
  3. Click Edit to the right of your name
  4. In the How would you like to share your pronouns? drop down, choose from the following options:
    1. Always share in meetings and webinars - Your pronouns will appear next to your display name automatically in any meeting or webinar you host or join.
    2. Ask me every time after joining meetings and webinars - You will be asked if you want your pronouns to appear next to your display name in every meeting or webinar you host or join.
    3. Do not share in meetings and webinars - Your pronouns will not appear next to your display name in any meeting or webinar you host or join.
    • Note: Even if you choose not to share your pronouns in meetings or webinars, your pronouns will still appear in your profile card and be visible to your Zoom contacts if you have entered them in the Pronouns field.
  5. Click Save

How to share and unshare your pronouns in a meeting or webinar

During a meeting or webinar, you have the ability to share or unshare your pronouns.

Note: If you have selected to share your pronouns, they will appear in any meeting or webinar you host or join. However, only webinar hosts and panelists can share their pronouns when in a webinar. Webinar attendees' pronouns are never shown.

Sharing your pronouns using the Windows, macOS, or Linux client:

  1. In the meeting controls toolbar, click Participants
  2. Hover the mouse cursor over your name, then click More
  3. Click Share My Pronouns
    • Your pronouns will appear next to your display name in your participant video or thumbnail and next to your display name in the Participants list.
  • Alternatively, you can hover your mouse over your video thumbnail, click ... in the top-right corner, then click Share My Pronouns

Sharing your pronouns using the iOS or Android client:

  1. In the meeting controls toolbar, tap Participants
  2. Tap your name
  3. Tap Share My Pronouns
    • Your pronouns will appear next to your display name in your participant video or thumbnail and next to your display name in the Participants list.

Unsharing your pronouns using the Windows, macOS, or Linux client:

  1. In the meeting controls toolbar, click Participants
  2. Hover the mouse cursor over your name, then click More
  3. Click Unshare My Pronouns
    • Your pronouns will no longer appear next to your display name in your participant video or thumbnail and next to your display name in the Participants list.
  • Alternatively, you can hover your mouse over your video thumbnail, click ... in the top-right corner, then click Unshare My Pronouns

Unsharing your pronouns using the iOS or Android client:

  1. In the meeting controls toolbar, tap Participants
  2. Tap your name
  3. Tap Unshare My Pronouns
    • Your pronouns will no longer appear next to your display name in your participant video or thumbnail and next to your display name in the Participants list.
