Zoom's email servers are currently down. This will impact people who register to a Zoom meeting or webinar or alternative hosts receiving emails. Other functionally Zoom uses for notifications may also be impacted. ITS staff is working with the vendor to resolve the issue.
On Wednesday, January 11, 2023, ITS will modify Zoom to disable third-party sign in. Google, Apple ID, and Facebook options will no longer be available. This was a legacy option used by a small group of accounts which have been transitioned to standard authentication. This is the final step to transition to standard login with HawkID Single Sign-On (SSO) required to access University of Iowa Zoom accounts. Please visit https://its.uiowa.edu/support/article/119561 for more information on logging into Zoom.

On Thursday, August 18, 2022 ITS will implement a Zoom minimum required client version of v5.11 to join university meetings/webinars which will prompt older client versions to update. This is to address a critical security issue in the Zoom client. Zoom users can find instructions on how to update clients ahead of that date if they choose.
On Wednesday, July 13th, 2022 ITS will implement a Zoom minimum required client version of v5.10.3 to join University meetings/webinars which will prompt older client versions to update. Zoom users can also update clients ahead of that date by following instructions in this ITS support article. Zoom will be enforcing quarterly updates going forward.
On Wednesday, June 1st, 2022 ITS will implement a Zoom minimum required client version of v5.9 to join University meetings/webinars which will prompt older client versions to update. Zoom users can also update clients ahead of that date by following instructions in this ITS support article. Zoom will be enforcing quarterly updates going forward.
Along with that update, the below changes will also be made:
- When registering for a meeting or webinar, registrants will no longer see the Zoom meeting/webinar link on the confirmation page. Instead, they will now only see that link on the confirmation email they receive. This is a required Zoom change to help improve security of meeting/webinar registration.
- Enable the updated Zoom whiteboard experience.

Read more on using the Zoom add-in for Outlook on the ITS support site.
Many of the Zoom security patches and new features depend on the locally installed version of Zoom. To help campus consistently take advantage of these features, on Tuesday, September 14 we will implement a Zoom minimum required client version of v5.5 which will prompt older client versions to update. Zoom users can also update clients ahead of that date by following instructions in this ITS support article.
On Tuesday, September 7th, 2021, ITS will enable the Pronouns feature available in Zoom. Zoom Pronouns will be determined by the pronouns selected in MyUI or Employee Self-Service. This data may take up to 24 hours to fully sync with Zoom. Users will be able to choose how pronouns are shown in meetings and webinars. By default, they will be set to Ask me every time after joining meetings and webinars.
You will need to update your Zoom client to a minimum version of 5.7.0 to see pronouns in a Zoom meeting or webinar. For information on how to update your Zoom client, please visit: How to Update the Zoom Client.
For more information and to find out how to use pronouns in Zoom, please visit: Zoom Pronouns.
Many of the Zoom security patches and new features depend on the locally installed version of Zoom. To help campus consistently take advantage of these features and reduce user confusion, on Tuesday, August 10 we will implement a Zoom minimum required client version of v5.4 which was released in October 2020. This version is nearly 10 months old and more than 82% of our connecting devices are already using this version, or newer, and will not be impacted by the minimum required version. The remaining 18% of older clients will update to the newest version starting on August 10, 2021. Zoom users can also update clients ahead of that date by following instructions in this ITS support article.
Starting July 7, 2021 users will be required to use single sign-on (SSO) to access Zoom (https://uiowa.zoom.us or using the SSO option in the Zoom client). SSO login has been available and used for Zoom previously, and requiring it will help us manage campus-wide licenses, provide enhanced security for account users, and enable more Zoom features for campus use.
This change should be seamless for most users. However, there is a minor subset of users who have not logged in with SSO that may need future meetings scheduled after July 7th to be moved and can contact the Help Desk to get their meetings transferred to their correct Zoom account.
