When attempting to access SAS through Virtual Desktop, you see the following error message:

ERROR: Library SASUSER does not exist.
NOTE: Unable to initialize the options subsystem.
ERROR: (SASXKINI): PHASE 3 KERNEL INITIALIZATION FAILED.
UNABLE TO INITIALIZE THE SAS KERNEL

This error message is due to the way SAS attempts to access your personal network storage drive (or H: drive) through Virtual Desktop.  It indicates that your H: drive is not mapped or the permissions are not set correctly.

Check to see if your H: drive is mapped properly and that you have permissions to write to your H: drive through Virtual Desktop by accessing an application such as Microsoft Word, opening a new document and choosing Save As.

Does the H: drive exist as an option to save to, and can you save the file to that folder? If not, your H: drive is not properly mapped or the permissions are not set correctly.

University of Iowa faculty or staff should contact their departmental IT person and be sure the H: drive is properly mapped and permissions are set correctly. Students should contact the ITS Help Desk at 319-384-HELP or its-helpdesk@uiowa.edu.
