New capabilities are now available in ChatGPT Edu: Image generation and Deep Research. These features expand how the platform can support research, teaching, learning, and day-to-day work across campus. While both features introduce new opportunities, they also have usage limits.
Image generation: a new way to communicate ideas
ChatGPT Edu now supports image generation from text prompts, allowing users to create custom visuals. This changes the process from searching for existing images to creating visuals that directly match your specific ideas or needs.
Common use cases could include:
- Creating visuals for presentations or training materials
- Illustrating complex or abstract concepts
- Supporting brainstorming or early-stage idea development
- Designing diagrams, metaphors, or conceptual graphics
This feature can be useful when existing images do not fully capture the intended message. Prompting an image requires users to be more specific about what they want to communicate, which often leads to clearer and more effective outputs.
Usage limit
Image generation is limited to 3 images per 24-hour rolling period per user. It is helpful to plan prompts in advance, be clear about the purpose of the image, and focus on quality over multiple variations. Before generating images, it is worth reviewing the university's guidance on responsible use. The guidelines for using AI securely and the AI guidelines and use cases page are both good starting points.
Deep Research: supporting more in-depth exploration
The Deep Research feature is designed for more complex or layered questions. It supports extended exploration by helping synthesize information, identify connections, and build a stronger understanding of a topic over multiple interactions.
This is particularly useful for early-stage research and literature exploration, comparing tools, ideas, or approaches, understanding complex topics or trends, and developing more detailed context before starting a project. Rather than a single question-and-answer exchange, Deep Research supports a more iterative and intentional inquiry process.
Usage limit
Deep Research is limited to 5 interactions per 24-hour rolling period per user. To make the most of each interaction, start with a clear, focused question, specify the type of response needed (summary, comparison, analysis, etc.), and use follow-up prompts to refine or deepen the output.
Why these updates matter
Together, these features expand how ChatGPT Edu can be used:
