Claude for Education is an AI-powered service available to faculty and staff. Users can access Claude through the claude.ai portal and Claude desktop app, with tools and capabilities including Claude Chat, Claude Cowork, Claude Code, and Claude Design.

Claude can assist with everyday academic and administrative work, such as drafting and summarizing content, analyzing information, developing project plans, supporting research and writing, creating designs and visual content, and assisting with coding and technical tasks. The UI Claude for Education environment has enterprise data protection.

Note: Claude Chat and Claude Cowork soon will be brought together into a unified Claude experience. As this transition occurs, the names and locations of these features within Claude may change.

Who can use Claude for Education?

Claude for Education is available to:

• Faculty and staff
• Additional license and cost required

Note: Consult with your supervisor, IT leadership, or Extended Technical Support to request this license.

Subscription options

Claude for Education is available through two subscription tiers:

• Standard: $20 per month
• Premium: $55 per month, offering five times the usage limit of the standard plan to support higher-volume usage, including research, development, and other complex use cases.

Individual student licenses are not supported at this time. Student access through faculty-requested class groups may be available in the future.

Data restrictions

Be sure that you understand data classifications, protect sensitive information, and follow university privacy requirements when using AI. Public and university internal data levels are approved for use with this tool. 

Restricted-critical data is permitted for use with consultation from your local IT director or the Information Security and Policy Office. To request a data consultation, email its-helpdesk@uiowa.edu.

Claude for Education is not approved for use with patient data or other data requiring HIPAA compliance. A separate HIPAA-ready Claude workspace, designed with additional protections for certain sensitive data, is expected to launch in the first quarter of 2027.
