Ensure that you are using Skype for Business and not Skype (for consumers).

Download the client

Most University-owned equipment should come with Skype for Business installed. If not, the Microsoft Skype For Business (Lync) client can be downloaded from the Help Desk Download site (HawkID and password required). 

Install the client

  1. Double-click on the Skype for Business 32-bit, Skype for Business 64-bit file, or Lync Client for Mac and follow the instructions below to install the client.  
  2. Microsoft Lync 2013 will become Skype for Business after Windows finishes installing updates.
    • If automatic transition to Skype for Business does not occur, please contact ITS Helpdesk
  3. Select Start | search for "Skype for Business"
  4. If Lync doesn't automatically sign you in, type your sign-in name (e.g., jane-doe@uiowa.edu)
  5. Click Sign In.

Download the client

The Microsoft Skype For Business (Lync) client can be downloaded from the Help Desk Download site (HawkID and password required). Download the Microsoft Skype for Business software.

Install the client

  1. Double-click on the Skype for Business 2016 x86.exe or Skype for Business 2016 x64.exe file and follow the instructions below to install the client.  Note:  These instructions are for a Windows computer that is joined to the domain.  Follow the instructions for installing Skype for Business.  After installing, run Windows Update and run updates (you may have to choose "Check online for updates from Microsoft Update) to get the latest updates for Skype for Business.
  2. Select Start | search for "Skype for Business"
  3. If Skype for Business doesn't automatically sign you in, type your sign-in name (e.g., jane-doe@uiowa.edu)
  4. Choose how you would like to be signed in (e.g., Available, Away, etc.)
  5. Click Sign In.
  6. Type your hawkid password.
  7. Select the checkbox next to "Save Password" if you would like to have your password remembered.
  8. You may receive a popup "Do you want us to save your Skype for BUsiness sign-in information?   Would you like us to save this information and sign you in automatically next time?"   Select Yes or No
  9. You also may receive a popup "Can't sign in to Skype for Business". Click OK on the popup window.

When starting Skype for Business (Lync) on Windows or macOS on University of Iowa-owned equipment, you may be required to log in. Please perform the following steps to log into your Skype for Business client.

Windows workstations should automatically log into Skype for Business using the account credentials of the workstation that you are currently on. If you experience trouble logging in, please enter the following information:

Sign-in Address = University of Iowa Email Address in the format shown (jane-doe@uiowa.edu).

When starting Skype for Business (Lync) on Windows or macOS on University of Iowa-owned equipment, you may be required to log in. Please perform the following steps to log into your Skype for Business client.

When logging into Skype for Business on macOS, please enter the following information:

Sign-in Address = University of Iowa Email Address in the format shown (jane-doe@uiowa.edu).

Password = Your HawkID Password

User Name = Your HawkID in the format as shown above.
