Follow the below guides for installing Skype for Business on your personal computer. Skype for Business should already be installed on your work computer. If it isn't or if you are having trouble finding it, please contact your IT representative.

Individuals may want to use Skype for Business on their personal computers so they can work from home or work remotely. The below instructions describe how to install the full licensed version and the free basic versions of Skype for Business. To review the differences between the two options, please read the Licensed vs. Free Basic Skype for Business FAQ at the bottom of the support page.

To download and install Skype for Business licensed edition please follow the steps below:
  1. Make sure to uninstall/remove any previous versions of Skype and Microsoft Office on your device. Failure to do so may result in software conflicts on your device
  2. Login to Office 365 using your HawkID@uiowa.edu username and password
  3. Go to the Install Office dropdown menu in the top right corner of the page
  4. Choose Other install options
  5. On the far left menu, choose Apps & devices
  6. Select the orange Install Office button to install
  7. Once successfully installed, follow these instructions for logging in to Skype for Business and log back into Office with your HawkID@uiowa.edu username and password if needed
To download and install Skype for Business free basic edition, please follow the steps below:
  1. Make sure to uninstall/remove any previous versions of Skype on your device. Failure to do so may result in software conflicts on your device
  2. Visit the Microsoft Skype for Business download portal here to begin
  3. Choose your preferred language and select the orange Download button
  4. Skype for Business will begin to download and install on your machine
  5. Once successfully installed, follow these instructions for logging in to Skype for Business

Note: If you do not connect within 30 days, Skype for Business goes into reduced functionality mode until you connect to the internet again and your status is verified (at which time all features become available again)

Microsoft provides two different versions of Skype for Business for users. The licensed version is only available for Windows computers and has these benefits over the free basic version:

  • Change greeting/voicemail
  • Initiate a call to a Response Group
  • Manage team call settings
  • Manage delegates
  • Handle another's calls if configured as a delegate
  • Manage a high volume of calls
  • Call park
  • Group call pickup
  • Missed call notification emails may not be generated
