Most ITS managed SQL Server systems will be impacted by April 2024 Infrastructure Day work. Expect brief outages of services running on or utilizing SQL Server databases, SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), and SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS).

Disruptions are estimated to last 5 minutes, however, some may extend longer. Existing or new connections to the database may fail as part of this work, i.e. an active SQL job may fail and may require review/restart. It is recommended that you review your services for any errors or reschedule processes to avoid this window.

On Saturday June 11, 2022, between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., the shared SQL Server instances IOWASQLHOST1, IOWASQLHOST2, and IOWASQLHOST3 will be migrated to new servers, resulting in intermittent downtimes of up to 20 minutes during the maintenance window.

The shared SQL Server instances IOWASQLHOST1, IOWASQLHOST2, and IOWASQLHOST3 will be migrated to new servers. 

During the maintenance window, databases on these systems will be sporadically unavailable for periods of up to 20 minutes. No application changes are necessary to accommodate this maintenance, however, applications that are sensitive to extended database unavailability may need to be restarted once the migration is complete. We recommend pausing data processing jobs scheduled on these servers during the maintenance and notifying customers expected to use applications connected to the servers at that time. 

This migration is urgent due to recurring connectivity issues on the Windows cluster hosting these instances that have resulted in multiple outages of campus services since April 2022. (Microsoft Server Security Updates for January had many issues and Microsoft ended up pulling those.  On January 17, they released new Out of Band Updates to resolve issues with the original dodgy patches if they were installed, and replace those dodgy patches if they were not installed.  To remain secure and fully patched, we will be deploying those Out of Band patches outside our normal production patching week.)

To support upcoming security enhancements to Oracle systems, we will upgrade Oracle drivers on a variety of centrally hosted SQL Server services. During this maintenance window, services will become sporadically unavailable. IOWASQLSEC4 will be unavailable intermittently for up to 30 minutes while the system is migrated to a new Windows cluster.

IOWASQLSEC4 will be intermittently unavailable for up to 30 minutes to resolve an issue with Windows clustering services.

IOWASQLSEC4 will be intermittently unavailable for up to 15 minutes during the maintenance window to resolve an issue introduced by the July 2018 Windows security patch. 

IOWAREPORTS3 (SQL Server 2016 Shared SSRS Hosting Service) will be unavailable due to scheduled maintenance. Some reports on MAUI and Campus Data may be temporarily unavailable during this window, but there should be no impact to the core functionality of either service. SSRS report subscriptions scheduled on this system during the window may not execute or deliver.
