Wireless
As you walk around campus, you may notice there are several wireless networks to choose from. We want you to understand the differences between the networks.
eduroam–short for education roaming. eduroam is the wireless network that you should use on all your devices. eduroam is the secure, worldwide roaming access service developed for the international education community. eduroam requires HawkID authentication to connect. When you visit other academic institutions that utilize eduroam, you will automatically connect to wireless without having to reenter your credentials. eduroam started in Europe and is now available in over 100 countries. It is based on the most secure encryption and authentication standards available and is more secure than typical commercial hotspots. More information can be found on the eduroam support pages.
UI-Guest–you should not use UI-Guest as it is not as safe and secure as eduroam. This option is designed for short-term use for campus guests who do not have a HawkID. More information can be found on the UI-Guest support page.
UI-DeviceNet–this option is designed for you to connect your gaming and streaming devices to wireless in the residence halls. It is also used by faculty and staff to connect devices such as smart plugs, thermostats, and research devices. Laptops, tablets, printers, and phones are not able to connect to this wireless network. More information can be found on the UI-DeviceNet support page.
Outdoor and Drive-Up Wireless–this service is offered at various campus locations to allow you to connect to eduroam in parking lots and other outdoor spaces without entering campus buildings. More information about locations can be found on the outdoor and drive-up wireless support page.
Note: Personal wireless routers are not needed, and not allowed on campus, including in the Residence Halls. This is due to the interference and disruption they can cause. Ports with personal wireless routers will be administratively disabled. If your wireless device is unable to connect to eduroam, configure your device using the eduroam Configuration Assistant Tool (CAT).
Wired Network
Desktop and laptop computers can take advantage of our safe, secure, and fast wired network accessible through data ports located all over campus. The wired network in the residence halls is ResNet. Connecting to the wired network, including ResNet, requires an ethernet cable.
For Off Campus
For off campus internet access, we provide a list of local internet service providers in the Iowa City and surrounding areas.
Best Practices
When connectivity issues arise and you cannot access the internet, we suggest you try the following:
- Update your device (install all recommended updates).
- Restart your device.
And particularly on mobile devices:
- Forget the network and then reconnect.
- If prompted, trust the certificate.
